Learn how to take control of your hip or knee pain in hybrid webinar

ON Aug 20, 2022, The Star is hosting a webinar titled “Take Control of Your Hip or Knee Pain and Get Active Again”, where Dr Chua Hwa Sen will be speaking on how we can take control of our hip or knee pain and get active again.

This hybrid webinar is a free educational event and will be held at Menara Star from 10am to 11.30am as well as online via Zoom.

During this webinar, Chua, Consultant Orthopaedic, Joint and Arthroplasty Surgeon with Sunway Medical Centre, will address common symptoms, causes and treatments for hip or knee pain including the newest technology in hip and knee replacement surgery – robotic technology.

Two guest speakers who are recovering patients of hip and knee replacement surgeries with robotic technology will also be sharing their experiences and recovery process during the webinar.

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis as it is a “wearing out” condition involving the breakdown of cartilage in the joints, is the most common cause of hip and knee pain.

In the Global Burden of Disease 2012 study, it was estimated that 250 million people are affected by knee osteoarthritis worldwide, with the number increasing yearly due to the rising prevalence of obesity and global population ageing.

In Malaysia, the Arthritis Foundation of Malaysia estimates that around one in 10 people aged 60 and above have osteoarthritis, with the most common being knee osteoarthritis.

To improve Malaysians’ access to healthcare, this webinar aims to raise awareness of this disease as well as knowledge about its treatment options.

While the majority of the public, especially the older demographic, has the perception that hip or knee pain is a condition that comes naturally with age and does not seek medical help to treat their condition, resulting in reduced mobility and subsequently reduced quality of life in the long term, there are surgical treatment options that can put people back on their feet again with minimal to no pain.

Last year, Sunway Medical Centre brought robotic technology into Malaysia, where hip or knee replacements were performed as robotic-arm assisted surgery.

This innovative approach uses CT-based 3D modelling to help surgeons see more of each patient’s diseased anatomy prior to surgery to formulate a personalised surgical plan, and integrates a robotic arm during surgery so surgeons cut with higher levels of precision and patients keep more of their healthy bone, tissue and ligaments.

Following robotic-arm assisted surgeries, patients have shorter hospital stays and recover much faster, with most patients returning to light day-to-day activities in as little as three weeks.

Far fewer complications arise from the surgeries in both the short and long term.

Optimal placement and alignment of hip or knee implants also helps replicate the feeling of a natural hip or natural knees.

“If you suffer from severe hip or knee pain that has persisted for some time, you have restricted mobility, you’re being kept from the activities you love,

“I highly urge you to consult with an orthopedic doctor, and explore the option of hip or knee replacement surgery with robotic technology,” said Chua. “There is no reason for anyone to be in pain.”

For people suffering hip or knee pain, join this free, educational webinar to learn how to take control of your pain and get active again.

The presentation and sharing session by guest speakers will be followed by a Q&A session with Chua. Register now for free before space runs out.
