FBM KLCI climbs on improved sentiment in global markets


KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI extended its gains headed into midday as most blue-chips rallied on the back of recent Wall Street gains.

At 12.30pm, the key index was up 11.01 points to 1,523.28, led higher by Axiata and financial stocks.

The broader market was positive with 471 gainers compared to 252 decliners although market activity remained subdued due to the Lunar New Year holiday period.

Axiata climbed 12 sen to RM3.84 while sector peer Digi gained two sen to RM3.82 and Maxis rose five sen to RM4.28.

Maybank climbed five sen to RM8.32, Public Bank added two sen to RM4.23, CIMB jumped seven sen to RM5.27 and Hong Leong Bank gained 14 sen to RM19.54.

Petronas Chemicals was up six sen to RM8.95 while Tenaga Nasional put on six sen to RM9.22.

Meanwhile, on the broader market shares in Bursa jumped 16 sen to RM6.42 following recent earnings results.

Top actives included G3 adding one sen to nine sen, DNeX rising 3.5 sen to 97.5 sen and Coraza putting on 4.5 sen to 94 sen.

Meanwhile, Japanese equities fell as US Nasdaq futures pointed to a weaker performance on worries over Sony Group's gaming business and Panasonic's profit slide. The benchmark Nikkei slid 1%.

In South Korea, the Kospi was up 2.4%.

Chinese markets remained closed due to the Lunar New Year holiday while in Australia, the ASX200 was down 0.2%.
