KUALA LUMPUR: Green Packet Bhd
’s wholly-owned e-wallet service provider, Kiplepay Sdn Bhd, has partnered with Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd
to introduce a cashless payment ecosystem for universities in Malaysia.
Following an agreement between KiplePay and Bank Islam earlier in July 2019 to pursue a new payment channel for the Islamic bank, both parties have launched the KipleUNI programme that is expected to involve four public universities by the first half of 2020.
Currently, KipleUNI programme is "live" at Universiti Utara Malaysia, with another three public universities namely Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia expected to come along by end-June.
Speaking to reporters after the launch on Monday, Bank Islam chief executive officer (CEO) Mohd Muazzam Mohamed expects the takeup rate for KipleUNI to reach more than 175,000 university users by end of 2020.
“From that, we projected more than 50% of them to be active users. Not limited to students and staff of the universities, Bank Islam merchants will also benefit from this partnership as the KiplePay app promotes business growth on both online and offline platform, ” he said.
Mohd Muazzam also added that the KipleUNI programme could also be expanded into private universities moving forward, although the immediate target is public universities.
Meanwhile, KiplePay CEO Kay Tan (pic, below) said that the students or staff of a participating university will be able to pay for food and beverages, laundry services, university fee payments and zakat (tithe), among others, via KipleUNI.
He pointed out that a key feature within the KiplePay app enables university users to link their debit and credit cards for top up.
In addition, they can also pay directly from their Bank Islam bank account via the KiplePay app when they scan the KiplePay QR in merchant stores.
“Over the next few months, we will go beyond. Through the unified digital payment solution more exciting features are lined-up for the universities. These include e-KYC which digitises the student IDs, e-fund distribution, e-bus service payments, e-attendance, and many other university services that resides within the ecosystem.
“While these are exciting plans coming ahead for KiplePay, they are just the beginning of truly exciting times for universities. We look forward to working closely with Bank Islam to push the boundaries of a cashless and digital ecosystem for universities to become the digitally-enabled institutions, ” Tan said.
