RUNNING his own business had always been Adrian Goh’s ambition. When opportunity beckoned, he acted swiftly and founded his own business.

The managing director of AireMist Sdn Bhd ended up carving a niche for himself in the water industry. AireMist is the sole distributor for the first air-to-water system in Malaysia.

Goh said he had always wanted to be an entrepreneur. Together with his brother, who is three years younger, he would come up with the most bizarre business ideas such as setting up a Bak Kut Teh store in San Francisco where they studied.

“I would write business plan after business plan and e-mail them to my father. He would give some pointers and advice to make the business more viable,” he said.

Goh, who has a double degree from California State University, worked in the corporate world for a while before setting up a company with his brother. “I don’t like the idea of working for no reason so I decided to set up my own business,” he said.

Goh started a freight company with his brother. While running the business, he was presented with an opportunity to set up AireMist through some business acquaintances. He currently heads AireMist while his brother continues to run the freight business.

“Going green and eco-friendly are the current buzzwords. Everyone is concerned about the environment and our product addresses these concerns, ” Goh told StarBiz in an interview.

“Eco-friendly ways of attaining clean drinking water are few and far between,” he said, adding that AireMist considered itself as a company that used technology in the interest of sustaining the environment.

“AireMist technology allows air to be turned into clean drinking water. Our system is very convenient. All you need is to find a power outlet, plug it in and you’ll get clean drinking water,” Goh said.

AireMist water generating system extracts moisture from the air through a condensation process. It uses a series of state-of-the-art water filtration to transform moisture in the air into pure drinking water.

“This technology is not new in the US, but it is the first such system in Malaysia,” Goh said, adding that the downside of the system was that it needed 15 hours to get a full tank of water when used for the first time.

AireMist has been certified by the Conformite Europeene and is a member of the Water Quality Association in the United States.

Although the company is relatively new, it has managed to secure some multinational corporations and individual as customers.

“Changing people’s mindset and telling them that water can be extracted from air is still a challenge for us. We have been educating people on this.

“It is not something that we can do overnight. It is progressing but slowly,” Goh said.

To a question, he said changing consumers’ mindset was more difficult than raising capital. “Budget is something which we can control but we cannot control people’s perceptions.

“Over the past few months, people have generally accepted the idea of air-to-water concept but there are still a lot of things for us to do. We will continue to educate the people,” Goh said.

He said it was every entrepreneur’s wish to increase the value of his business but AireMist would be cautious this year.

“We are scaling down our budget but we are not expecting a slowdown. The company has been growing from strength to strength. We want a steady growth for the future and not fluctuations in growth,” Goh said.

He said the work had been hard but exciting. “There are days when I don’t feel like going to the office but I end up in the office anyway.”

“I feel really great when I get things done especially when I tackle the problems one by one,” Goh said.

He also believes in the importance of empowering employees. He said he was not a difficult boss and he makes his own coffee.

Despite his busy schedule, life is not all work and no play for this young entrepreneur. He makes time for basketball, badminton and golf on a weekly basis.
