HONG KONG: Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, the world's seventh largest airline by market value, reported yesterday a 38% dive in second-half earnings, lagging forecasts as soaring fuel prices outweighed robust passenger growth.

Singapore-traded jet fuel prices, which rose nearly 60% last year, have also prevented regional rivals such as Singapore Airlines Ltd and Australia's Qantas Airways Ltd from turning passenger growth into profit.
