HE was known as Malaysia's Palm Oil King. Yet Tan Sri Borge Bek-Nielsen, who died yesterday from a massive stroke at the age of 79, only controlled a plantation empire of under 100,000 acres. 

Compared with the likes of Kuala Lumpur Kepong, IOI Plantations, Perlis Plantation and those in the Permodalan Nasional stable like Guthrie and Golden Hope, Bek-Nielsen's United Plantations (UP) is only mid-sized among giants.
