Toyama Bay snow crab season opens with smaller catch, higher prices

IMIZU, Toyama; The snow crab fishing season began on Friday in Toyama Bay, marking the start of the harvest of one of Japan’s most prized winter delicacies. The season’s first auction was held at Shinminato Fishing Port in Imizu, Toyama Prefecture.

Four fishing boats headed out to sea that day, bringing in about 2,090 crabs, roughly 30 per cent fewer than last year. However, the crabs were comparable to those caught in a typical year in terms of size and meat content, according to the Shinminato fisheries cooperative. Auction prices were nearly double those of last year.

“I hope many people will enjoy fresh snow crabs from Toyama Bay,” the captain of one of the fishing boats said.

Snow crab fishing in Toyama Bay will enter full swing in December. The fishing season runs until Jan 20 for females and March 20 for males. - Japan News/ANN
