Japan's Miyu Yamashita is just cool on the expectations as she defends her title at the Maybank Championship

Defending champion Miyu Yamashita of Japan is relishing the opportunity to defend her title at the LPGA Maybank Championship, which tees off at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) this week, and insists she is unfazed by the pressure.

The world number four, who has enjoyed an impressive season with multiple victories, said she was excited to return to the tournament after claiming the title last year.

The 25-year-old also hopes to put on another strong showing for Malaysian golf fans.

"I don’t really feel much pressure, and I’ve been really looking forward to playing here as the defending champion.

"So, I hope a lot of fans come out to watch us play in the tournament,” she told reporters at a press conference here today.

On the challenges posed by the KLGCC course, Yamashita said consistency would be crucial if she were to reproduce last year’s winning performance.

"I think consistency with my shots is really important because there are a lot of tricky holes out there. So, I’ll focus on hitting good second shots,” she added.

Featuring several of the world’s best players, the tournament beginning this Thursday (Oct 29), the championship that has quickly established itself as a marquee stop on the LPGA Tour, combines elite competition with a fan-friendly atmosphere

With anticipation building for another classic edition, there is certainly no shortage of storylines waiting to develop.

Perhaps the most compelling is China’s Ruoning Yin. The former world No 1 and champion here two years ago, she arrives on the back of a victory in Shanghai recently and, if Ruoning can carry that momentum into Kuala Lumpur, she will have every chance of becoming a two-time Maybank Championship winner.

Her combination of power and composure proved decisive when she lifted the trophy in 2024 and will surely be among the favourites again.

The Malaysian contingent will also have plenty to play for.

One notable change to the field saw national amateur Jeneath Wong withdraw. Taking her place among the sponsor invites was Genevieve Ling, who will relish the opportunity to test herself against one of the strongest fields assembled in women’s golf.

There will also be keen interest in Mirabel Ting, who recently achieved a significant career milestone by securing her LPGA Tour card. The Sarawak-born rising star has been steadily building towards golf’s biggest stage and would love to mark her return to KLGCC with a strong performance.

Her tie for 12th a couple of years ago is still fresh in the memory – she emerged as the leading Malaysian in the field on that occasion.

Liyana Durisic, meanwhile, earned her place through qualifying and arrives with encouraging form of her own.

Having produced several positive performances throughout the year, Liyana will be hoping to cap off her season with a breakthrough showing on one of the biggest stages available to Malaysian golf.

Alongside Mirabel, Genevieve and Liyana, local fans will be eager to see how the other Malaysian representatives acquit themselves against a top field.

One notable absentee, however, will be world No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul, whose withdrawal has deprived the championship of one of its biggest stars.

Still, the depth of talent on parade ensures the event remains packed with quality and loads of intrigue.

Away from the ropes, organisers are once again expected to deliver an extensive programme of fan engagement activities. From interactive experiences to family-friendly attractions, there will be plenty to complement four days of world-class golf in the capital of Malaysia.

The course itself promises to be a worthy stage. KLGCC’s West Course is expected to be presented in immaculate condition, with tournament officials and course management expressing confidence that the layout will be in superb shape for championship week.

As always at this time of year, attention will inevitably turn to the weather. Should the rain remain relatively polite, and with all the preparations in place, we should have another memorable chapter in store at one of Asia’s premier golf tournaments. -- Agencies/Bernama/LPGA Golf
