Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano erupts once again; this time, spewing thick ash plume

JAKARTA (Xinhua): Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia's South Lampung regency erupted on Friday afternoon, spewing a thick ash plume about 250 meters above its peak, according to the country's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.

The ash column, drifting north and northwest, lasted over 3 minutes and 46 seconds on seismograms, the agency said in a statement.

The alert of the volcano remains at Level II, with authorities strictly warning against any activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the active crater.

In early September, volcanic ash from a previous eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau led to the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport near the Indonesian capital city of Jakarta, disrupting dozens of flights. -- Xinhua
