Heavy rains trigger flooding in Philippines' Cebu communities

CEBU CITY, (Philippines): Flooding continues to affect parts of Cebu as another residential area in Casili, Consolacion, was reportedly submerged following a heavy downpour on Tuesday (Oct 6).

Rubelyn Rollorata, 36, captured the flooding on video at around noon and shared it on TikTok. She said the affected residential area is located near a creek, where floodwaters quickly rose after the heavy rain.

“How to explain this when there is no typhoon, but it is flooding like this after heavy rain! Just keep fighting!” Rollorata wrote.

Rollorata said similar flooding occurs in the area around three to four times a year, particularly after heavy rains.

Similar flooding in Tisa

The incident came after a similar flooding incident was reported in Lower Tambisan, Barangay Tisa, Cebu City, in the past few days, when heavy rain caused floodwaters to rapidly rise in the area.

A video shared by resident Reyfhiel Silawan showed water quickly inundating parts of the community following the downpour.

“The flood rose quickly. How bitter this is for the people residing here. What can they do if the rain won’t stop?,” Silawan wrote in her post.

The flooding left residents concerned as water levels rose quickly following the heavy rain.

Rainy start to October

The incidents come as several parts of Cebu have experienced heavy downpours in the past days, resulting in flooding in some low-lying and vulnerable communities.

The recurring flooding has renewed concerns among residents, particularly in areas located near creeks and waterways or those with drainage systems that may struggle to handle sudden volumes of rainwater.

Weather conditions affecting the Visayas have also brought periods of rain and thunderstorms, with intense rainfall potentially triggering flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

A recurring concern

For residents of Casili and Lower Tambisan, the recent incidents highlight how quickly heavy rain can turn into a flooding threat, even without a typhoon.

With some communities experiencing flooding several times a year, residents continue to face the challenge of protecting their homes, belongings and families whenever intense rainfall occurs.

The incidents also underscore the need for continued attention to drainage systems and other flood-control measures in communities that regularly experience rising waters. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
