TOKYO: Heavy rains caused by Typhoon Dujuan, also known as Typhoon No. 25, have caused the levee around Inbanuma lake in northern Chiba Prefecture to collapse, resulting in widespread flooding.
As of Thursday (Sept 24), water remains standing in homes, rice paddies, and roads across a wide area.
In a northern district bordering the lake, many homes are flooded up to the floor level, forcing residents to live in evacuation shelters.
A 62-year-old part-time farmer suffered damage when three-quarters of his 28-hectare rice field—which was nearing the end of the harvest—was submerged.
In addition to 30 bags of brown rice (30kg each) stored in his warehouse, his combine harvester, dryer, and two cars were also submerged.
“My home has been destroyed, and I’ll need a large sum of money just to replace my farm equipment,” the man said.
