Woman raped while son held at knifepoint in Mymensingh, Bangladesh

DHAKA: Police have arrested a man in a case filed over the alleged gang-rape of a woman after her ninth-grade son was held at knifepoint in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon upazila.

The arrestee, Rajib, 21, is a resident of the upazila, said police.

Mymensingh’s Additional Superintendent of Police Monotosh Biswas said police launched an overnight operation after the incident on Thursday (Sept 17) night and arrested Rajib early Friday (Sept 18).

The victim filed the case with Gafargaon Police Station Friday afternoon.

According to the case statement, five young men went to the 38-year-old woman’s residence around 8pm on Thursday, ostensibly to ask for water.

At one point, they held her and her son at knifepoint.

The accused allegedly looted Tk 5 lakh in cash, gold ornaments and other valuables before gang-raping the woman and filming the incident.

The woman also alleged that the accused demanded an additional Tk 2 lakh within three days and threatened to circulate the video on social media if she did not pay.

Hearing the woman’s screams, neighbours rushed to the house, rescued her and informed police, said the case statement.

The five accused include Sharif Miah, 23, and Arif Miah, 21.

Police did not disclose the names of the two other accused for the sake of investigation.

Police were conducting drives to arrest the others, said Monotosh.

The victim will be sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital today for a medical examination. - The Daily Star/ANN
