HONG KONG: A public wake will be held for Tung Chee-hwa, the first chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, on Saturday, with funeral services scheduled for the following day.
Tung passed away at 9:57 pm on Sept 8 in Hong Kong at the age of 89 after a period of illness, according to an obituary released by the funeral committee.
The funeral committee, which comprises 87 members, announced the public wake will take place from 3 pm to 10 pm on Saturday at the Hong Kong Funeral Home’s Fuk Hoi Tong hall.
A public memorial and funeral service will be held at 9 am on Sunday, and the funeral procession is scheduled for 11 am.
Shi Taifeng, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and head of the CPC Central Committee’s Organisation Department, has been named chairman of the funeral committee.
Vice chairmen include Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee; Wang Dongfeng, vice chairman and secretary-general of the CPPCC National Committee; Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the CPC Central Committee and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council; and Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-Chiu.
The obituary described Tung as an outstanding contributor to “one country, two systems,” a renowned patriot, a distinguished social activist, and a close friend of the CPC. - China Daily/ANN
