MYMENSINGH: A 35-year-old man was allegedly set on fire after unidentified assailants poured petrol on him in Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh on Wednesday night.
The victim, Farhad Hossain, died while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) today. The incident occurred around 10pm in the Madhyahisya area of Muktagacha town.
Quoting locals and family members, Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Muktagacha Police Station, said Farhad was a vegetable seller and had been active in social movements, including campaigns against drugs and demands for employment opportunities.
The OC said Farhad, a father of three, came out of his house around 10pm when assailants allegedly poured petrol on him from behind and set him on fire before fleeing. Hearing his screams, locals rescued him and took him to Muktagacha Upazila Health Complex. He was later referred to MMCH, where he died around noon today.
His father Abdus Sattar told reporters that the attack was linked to his son’s anti-drug campaigns and social activities.
Police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible. The body was sent to the Mymensingh Medical College morgue for autopsy.
No case had been filed, and no arrests were made at the time of reporting, the OC said. - The Daily Star/ANN
