YANGON: Myanmar's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation has designated a new protected public forest area in the eastern state of Shan, the state-owned daily The Mirror reported on Tuesday (Sept 8)
The ministry designated 61,008 acres of land in Mongpyin township, Shan state as a protected public forest, effective Sept. 1, the report said.
The move aims to improve ecosystems in the region, sustainably manage watersheds and mitigate climate change. It will also greatly assist local people in their agricultural activities and bring other benefits, the report said.
The designation will also help conserve forests and wildlife species, improve ecosystems, support the socio-economic development of local people, improve the climate, further develop agriculture and horticulture, and enhance the sustainability of village water sources, it added. - Xinhua
