NUWAKOT, (Nepal): Rescue teams have found 24 bodies inside one house in flood-hit Nuwakot district. The house is located in Betrawati, Bidur Municipality-10.
The discovery was made on Monday (Aug 31). Superintendent of Police Bipin Regmi of the District Police Office, Nuwakot, confirmed the news.
According to Regmi, search operations inside the house are still going on. He said the final count of bodies will only be confirmed later on Tuesday.
Police believe the number could rise further as the search continues.
Ownership of house still unclear
Police have not yet confirmed who owns the house. They have not been able to reach the local ward chair for details.
Some reports suggest the building may have been a hotel or guest house, but this has not been verified.
Investigators are trying to find out why such a large number of people were present at one location.
Scale of flood damage
The disaster struck on Aug 26, when a sudden flood swept down from Bhotekoshi river in Rasuwa.
The flood caused massive loss of life and property across the region. It damaged homes, roads, and bridges along its path.
As of Monday, more than 900 bodies have been recovered nationwide.
Thousands of people are still unaccounted for, raising fears that the death toll may climb higher.
The flood hit with little warning, catching many residents and travellers off guard.
Villages along the river corridor faced the worst destruction.
