Major Lao govt meeting focuses on flood relief, fuel and commodity prices

VIENTIANE (Xinhua): Lao officials gathered for the government's monthly meeting for August, providing a platform to discuss key national issues, with a focus on flood relief, fuel and commodity prices, and other pressing concerns, Lao News Agency reported on Monday.

The meeting, held in the Lao capital Vientiane from Monday to Tuesday, comes as Laos faces continued economic pressures, including fluctuations in global fuel prices and exchange rates, rising transportation and commodity costs, and growing pressure on household livelihoods.

Flash floods and other natural disasters have also affected eight provinces nationwide, damaging homes, farmland and infrastructure. Senior officials have recently visited affected areas to assist and called on disaster management committees to strengthen preparedness and response measures.

During the two-day meeting, participants will review the government's priority work and plans, along with measures to manage fuel and commodity prices and strengthen disaster preparedness.

The meeting will also discuss several revised laws and decrees covering government administration, state procurement, health insurance, social security, civil aviation and cybercrime. -- Xinhua
