COLOMBO: Sri Lanka has recorded a gradual decline in fish harvests within its territorial waters since 2014, according to the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), local news outlet The Morning reported Saturday.
NARA Chairman Sanath Hettiarachchi said the agency had not identified a single cause for the decline. However, changes within the marine biological system are considered a major factor affecting fish availability and harvest levels.
The development has prompted attention to alternative sources of fish production as Sri Lanka seeks to maintain supplies while reducing pressure on marine resources.
NARA is Sri Lanka's principal national institution responsible for conducting and coordinating research, development and management activities relating to aquatic resources.
Marine fisheries continue to account for the majority of Sri Lanka's domestic fish production. Official data show that the country produced 410,760 metric tons of fish in 2024, of which 308,430 metric tons came from the marine sector. - Xinhua
