KUALA LUMPUR: Provident Banc Berhad reinforced its commitment to responsible financing and financial well-being through an exclusive industry panel discussion and the establishment of three strategic partnerships aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s evolving financial ecosystem.
Held in collaboration with Masryef Academy, a Shariah advisory and Islamic finance consultancy, the event brought together distinguished leaders from Malaysia’s financial services ecosystem for a panel discussion titled “Cost of Living, Digital Debt & Financial Stress: The Role of Islamic Financing in Building Financial Stability.”
The event was officiated by Datuk Prof Mazlan Ahmad, Founder of Masyi Group of Companies, a distinguished corporate leader with more than 20 years of experience in the banking sector. His career includes various roles at Bank Negara Malaysia spanning strategic planning, human resource management, branch operations, financial intelligence and financial crime enforcement.
With extensive experience in corporate governance, Islamic social finance and entrepreneurship, as well as various advisory roles supporting integrity and good governance, his presence brought valuable industry perspective and significance to the occasion.
The panel discussion examined how rising living costs, digital debt and increasing financial complexity are influencing the financial decisions of individuals and households in Malaysia.
The panel featured Nor Shahmir Nor Shahid, Executive Director of Provident Banc Berhad; Dauk Dr Mustafha Abd Razak, Honorary Treasurer of Koperasi Kakitangan Bank Rakyat Berhad and Former Managing Director of Bank Rakyat; Zairil Anuar Ahmad, Chief Technology Officer of Co-opbank Pertama; Matthew Fernandez, Chief Operating Officer of MicroLEAP PLT; Nirmala Supramaniam, Head of Household Financial Education at AKPK; and Vikraman Kalia Purumal, Chief Executive Officer of MARC Data.
The discussion was moderated by Peter Yong, widely known as Mr. Money TV, a prominent advocate for financial literacy and education through digital media.

A key message emerging from the discussion was that financial resilience cannot be achieved through access to financing alone. Panellists highlighted the importance of adopting a more holistic approach that combines responsible financing practices with stronger financial literacy, informed decision-making and greater collaboration between financial institutions, regulators, technology providers and other industry stakeholders.
The discussion also explored how evolving consumer borrowing behaviours and the rapid growth of digital financial services are reshaping Malaysia’s financial landscape.
As financial solutions become increasingly accessible through technology, the panel highlighted the importance of balancing convenience and innovation with responsible practices that help consumers understand their financial commitments and make decisions aligned with their longer-term financial circumstances.
These developments present an opportunity for the financial services industry to create an ecosystem in which innovation, accessibility and financial education work together to support consumers while contributing to broader economic well-being.
In conjunction with the panel discussion, Provident marked another significant milestone through the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with MicroLEAP PLT, Holborn Capital Partners Sdn Bhd and Peopleperks International Sdn Bhd (HariWang).

The collaborations bring together complementary expertise across alternative financing, wealth and financial advisory services and employee financial well-being, reflecting Provident’s broader approach towards building an ecosystem of solutions that can address different aspects of customers’ financial needs.

Speaking on Provident’s approach to responsible financing, Nor Shahmir Nor Shahid, Executive Director of Provident Banc Berhad, said: “At Provident, we believe responsible financing goes beyond providing access to funds.
