YANGON: Flooding has occurred on roads in low-lying wards of Kalaw Township, Southern Shan State, after water levels in Kalaw Creek rose, according to local social welfare and rescue workers.
A social welfare worker in Kalaw said that light rain on Monday (Aug 10) morning caused the creek’s water level to rise, resulting in roads being inundated and water entering homes in low-lying Ward 4 and Ward 2.
“The water level hasn’t risen too much yet. The road to the railway station is flooded, but the water hasn’t reached the bridge yet. Ward 4 is the main affected area, while Ward 2 is also affected to some extent. Ward 4 is a low-lying area, so water has entered some houses, but they are not seriously submerged. It is more like the water level has risen,” the social welfare worker said.
“The water rose quickly because runoff from the hills flowed down. For now, the water level has stopped rising, so we are monitoring the situation. The rain has not stopped yet. It has been about a week of intermittent rain. We are concerned that the water level could rise further if the rain continues. The water level is still rising at present,” the worker added.
Flooding and water overflowing onto roads were also reported on Monday morning in Shwenyaung in Taunggyi Township and Hopong Township in the Pa-O region.
Kalaw Township and Inle Lake also experienced severe flooding and inundation in August 2024 due to record-breaking floods. - Eleven Media/ANN
