NEW DELHI: A complaint flagging 20 Facebook and Instagram links has brought Meta’s India head into a Hyderabad cybercrime case over alleged attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led NEET paper leak agitation.
Operators of several social media accounts have also been booked. The complainant accused the posts of spreading misinformation, promoting enmity and posing a threat to national security.
Police received the complaint at 7.40 pm on July 29 from T. Saikiran Goud, 32, who is identified in the FIR as a social media CC member of BJP Telangana.
Goud said he came across the reels and posts at around 2 pm that day while browsing social media.
He alleged that the content was derogatory towards the Prime Minister and carried narratives that could harm national integrity.
The complainant submitted 20 URLs containing Facebook and Instagram reels and posts for investigation.
Goud urged the cybercrime police to secure the electronic evidence and identify the people operating the accounts.
He also asked investigators to coordinate with Meta Platforms and obtain information linked to the accounts.
The complaint sought action against Meta over allegations that the company had allowed morphed reels to circulate on its platforms.
ASI K. Hari Ram registered the case at the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police Station under Sections 66(C) and 67 of the Information Technology Act.
Sections 353(2) and 336(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have also been invoked.
Inspector P. Jaya Shanker has been assigned the investigation.
