YANGON: Conjoined twin girls who underwent separation surgery at Yangon Children’s Hospital are recovering well and are now able to move around independently, according to health officials.
As of 30 June, the twins were 19 days post-surgery.
Doctors said both children are in good health and continuing to make steady progress following the successful operation.
The girls were born by caesarean section at the Central Women’s Hospital in Mandalay on 8 January 2024 to a 31-year-old mother from Pakokku.
Under the guidance and support of the Ministry of Health, they received continuous specialist care at hospitals in Mandalay and Yangon before being transferred to Yangon Children’s Hospital in January 2026 to prepare for the complex procedure.
The separation surgery was successfully carried out on 11 June, when the twins were two years and five months old.
The operation involved a multidisciplinary team of professors, specialist surgeons and nurses from Yangon Children’s Hospital, Yangon General Hospital, Mandalay Children’s Hospital and North Okkalapa General Hospital.
With this latest operation, Myanmar has successfully performed a total of 12 conjoined twin separation surgeries using local medical specialists — nine at Yangon Children’s Hospital and three at Mandalay Children’s Hospital.
