TOKYO: Japan recorded its first officially designated “brutally hot day” on Tuesday after the temperature reached 40 deg C in Gujo, Gifu Prefecture, at about 2pm.
Under the influence of a high-pressure system, temperatures rose across the country from early morning.
The day’s highest temperature of 40.3 deg C was recorded in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, followed by 40.1 deg C in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture.
Dozens of cities recorded temperatures above 39 deg C, including Nagoya, Gifu City and Tatebayashi in Gunma Prefecture.
Central Tokyo recorded its highest temperature of the year at 36.4 deg C.
As days with temperatures above 40C have become more common, the Japan Meteorological Agency introduced an official term for them in April — kokusho-bi, or “brutally hot day”. — Japan News/ANN
