PHNOM PENH: The US embassy in Cambodian has recognised the kingdom’s commitment to eliminate online crimes, with a promise to step up collaboration between their respective law enforcement agencies.

Chhay Sinarith, chairman of the Secretariat of the Ad-hoc Committee to Combat Technology-Based Scams (CCTC), briefed Aleksandra Zittle, embassy chargé d’affaires, on efforts to eradicate scamming operations.

During the July 15 meeting, Sinarith highlighted what he called the “excellent cooperation” between Cambodia and US law enforcement authorities.

“This cleanup campaign will continue consistently. Cambodia will continue to pursue legal action against all ringleaders, accomplices, perpetrators and those who provide the means for such activities,” he said.

“Our goal is to eliminate and prevent these crimes from recurring. Cambodia welcomes close, honest and trust-based cooperation with our partners to jointly solve this complex and interconnected global issue,” he added.

According to a CCTC statement, Zittle expressed appreciation for Cambodia’s efforts, mechanisms and legal instruments, as well as the results achieved, in the fight against technology-based scams.

She reportedly acknowledged the complexity of transnational crimes, noting that combating them requires close and effective cooperation between relevant countries.

Zittle shared that the US government considers the fight against technology-based scams an urgent priority. She hoped that the law enforcement authorities of both nations will find further opportunities to increase cooperation and achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness.

The US embassy noted that during the meeting, Zittle recognised the CCTC’s year-long crackdown on scam compounds and urged the Cambodian government to accelerate its campaign to hold operators accountable.

The two sides agreed to develop closer collaboration to dismantle illegal scam centres and enhance law enforcement partnership.

Late September will see Cambodia host a large-scale international conference on the fight against technology-based scams, noted the CCTC. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
