Heavy rain affects air travel in Mumbai and Delhi

HYDERABAD, (India): (Bernama) Monsoon rains lashed India's financial capital, Mumbai, and the national capital, New Delhi, on Sunday (July 5), disrupting flight operations, forcing multiple diversions and causing widespread flooding that paralysed traffic in parts of Mumbai.

Heavy rain and strong winds forced Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to shut its runway for about an hour on Sunday morning, local media reported.

Air India and IndiGo said flight operations to and from Mumbai and Delhi were affected by adverse weather, with some services cancelled and several flights diverted.

At least 13 flights bound for Mumbai and 15 flights heading to Delhi were diverted to nearby airports, according to local reports.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a "red alert" for the Mumbai region, warning of heavy rain.
