NAYPYITAW, Myanmar: Myanmar has not failed in its responsibilities to maintain friendly relations with Asean and will continue to engage with the regional bloc, according to Presidential Office spokesperson Dr Khaing Khaing Soe.

Speaking at a press briefing in Naypyitaw on 30 June, Dr Khaing Khaing Soe responded to a question about whether Myanmar would attend the Asean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in July and the Asean Summit in November.

“If you ask whether Myanmar will attend Asean meetings, I would ask whether we will be invited. If we receive an invitation, we will attend,” she said. “The issue is whether we are invited and at what level of representation. Nevertheless, Myanmar has never neglected its responsibilities in maintaining friendly relations with Asean. We have consistently participated in Asean meetings.”

She noted that Myanmar was represented at the 48th Asean Summit and related meetings held in Cebu, the Philippines, on 7–8 May, 2026 by a delegation led by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hauk Khant Sone.

During the summit, Asean leaders discussed regional energy and food security, the safety of Asean nationals in the Middle East, the impact of geopolitical tensions on oil supplies and prices, progress in Asean Community-building, and cooperation with external partners.

The Myanmar delegation also outlined the country’s political developments, the new government’s priorities, and Myanmar’s continued participation in Asean Community-building efforts. Before the summit, the delegation also attended several ministerial and council meetings, including the Asean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the Asean Political-Security Community Council, the Asean Coordinating Council, and the Joint Asean Foreign and Economic Ministers’ Meeting. - Eleven Media/ANN
