A record-breaking sum of more than 150 million taka (RM4.95mil) was found in the donation boxes of the historic Pagla Masjid in Kishoreganj after a daylong count on Saturday, marking the highest amount ever collected in the mosque’s history, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) reported.
Additional District Magistrate Md Ershadul Ahmed confirmed that a total of 159 million taka (RM5.25mil) was collected from 13 iron donation boxes of the mosque in the Harua area beside the Narsunda River in Kishoreganj.
He added that the donation boxes were opened at 7am and the counting ended at 8pm.
Around 590 people, including members of the mosque management committee, teachers and students from the madrasa and orphanage located within the mosque complex, students from nearby Jamia Imdadia Madrasa and officials of Rupali Bank took part in the counting process.
The boxes were last opened on Dec 27, 2025, and 117.8 million taka (RM3.88mil) was collected from them.
Earlier, Pagla Mosque authorities in Kishoreganj collected 43 sacks of cash and gold from the donation boxes on Saturday morning, six months after the last count.
The amount was later deposited into the Pagla Mosque account at Rupali Bank.
Gold, silver and foreign currency that were collected at that time have also been sealed and deposited with the district treasury.
Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner and president of the mosque management committee Sohana Nasrin said the donation boxes – consisting of 10 permanent chests and three temporary trunks – were opened after being completely filled.
The mosque currently has 1.14 billion taka (RM37.64mil) in its total fund. — Bernama
