Aftershocks expected after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake strikes the Philippines' municipality of Sarangani on Friday (June 26) night


KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake jolted the municipility of Sarangani, in the Philippines’ Davao Occidental at 7.34pm on Friday (June 26), according to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on its Facebook.

PNA, citing the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), said the quake's epicentre was at 90 kilometres southwest of Balut Island at a depth of 10 km.

"Aftershocks are expected but Phivolcs says there is no tsunami threat from the earthquake,” PNA posted.

The Philippines, an archipelagic nation in Southeast Asia, is frequently affected by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a vast horseshoe-shaped zone of intense seismic and volcanic activity surrounding the Pacific Ocean. - BERNAMA
