Rewang Zapin unites Nusantara heritage through the spirit of 'One Village, One Soul'

The Department of Culture, Arts, Tourism, and Sports of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) successfully organised the Rewang Zapin programme under the theme “One Village, One Soul” at Panggung Anniversari, Kuala Lumpur Botanical Gardens, reaffirming its commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Malay world.

The programme brought together traditional artists, zapin dancers, musicians, and members of the public in a vibrant celebration of one of the region’s most treasured performing arts.

It served as a platform to strengthen cultural appreciation while reinforcing Zapin as a symbol of unity, identity, and the shared heritage of the Nusantara.

Rewang Zapin featured the participation of 11 Zapin ensembles from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, presenting a diverse repertoire including Arab Zapin, Traditional Malay Zapin, and Contemporary Zapin.

The cross-border participation reflected the enduring significance of Zapin as a cultural bridge that continues to unite communities across Southeast Asia through a shared artistic and historical legacy.

In addition to the stage performances, the programme also featured the popular Zapin Lambak, an interactive community dance session that invited visitors to participate alongside the performers. The activity provided an opportunity for audiences of all ages to experience the beauty, rhythm, and spirit of Zapin in a warm, welcoming, and festive atmosphere.

The theme “One Village, One Soul” embodies the traditional values of cooperation, mutual respect, and community spirit that are deeply rooted in the Malay concept of rewang.

These timeless values formed the foundation of the programme, transforming Rewang Zapin into more than just a cultural performance—it became a meaningful platform for social interaction, cultural exchange, and intergenerational engagement, ensuring that this invaluable heritage continues to thrive.

The programme also demonstrated that traditional performing arts can continue to evolve while preserving their authenticity and cultural identity. By embracing both tradition and creative innovation, Zapin remains a living heritage that continues to resonate with contemporary audiences.

The Department of Culture, Arts, Tourism and Sports, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), remains committed to organising cultural initiatives that strengthen public appreciation of Malaysia’s cultural heritage while fostering greater cultural collaboration across the Nusantara region, ensuring that these priceless traditions continue to flourish for future generations.
