MANILA (Xinhua): A 10-year-old boy was killed, and two other children were injured after an unexploded 40 millimetre mortar projectile they found in a river exploded in Cotabato province in the southern Philippines before noon on Monday, local police said.
Police said the victims were swimming in a river in the municipality of Arakan when they discovered the unexploded ordnance.
According to investigators, the children struck the projectile with a rock, triggering an explosion.
The 10-year-old boy died from injuries sustained in the blast, police said.
The two injured victims were an eight-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy.
They were taken to a hospital for treatment. -- XINHUA
