VIENTIANE: The Lao Red Cross launched a blood donation campaign in the Lao capital Vientiane to mark World Blood Donor Day, which falls on June 14.

Representatives from government agencies, the armed forces, police, educational institutions, development partners and the general public took part in the campaign on Thursday (June 11). The event is expected to collect more than 400 units of blood, Lao News Agency reported on Friday.

Speaking at the event, Lao Red Cross President Khamlavan Chanthalavan said that millions of lives are saved each year through blood transfusions.

Despite progress in many countries, maintaining a sufficient supply of safe, high-quality blood remains a challenge. Continued public participation in blood donation is therefore crucial to strengthening healthcare services and saving lives. - Xinhua
