JAKARTA (Bernama): More than 1,000 university students and members of the public joined a demonstration in Central Jakarta on Friday, which ended peacefully at about 8.30pm and traffic returned to normal along major roads, including Jalan Jenderal Sudirman.

The protest, centred at Bundaran HI in the city centre, began at about 3pm and was organised by student groups protesting rising living costs, fuel prices and several government policies.

As night fell, demonstrators gradually dispersed, and roads affected by traffic diversions were reopened to motorists.

No major disturbances were observed during the demonstration, which proceeded under tight security throughout the day.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police had deployed 6,088 joint police and military personnel to secure demonstrations at several locations across the capital, including the House of Representatives complex, Bundaran HI, Patung Kuda and Cikini Raya. -- BERNAMA
