Woman gunned down outside Philippines' Negros Occidental jail


BACOLOD CITY, (Philippines): A 41-year-old woman was shot dead by motorcycle-riding assailants shortly after leaving the Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ) in Barangay Tabunan, Bago City, on Saturday (June 6) afternoon.

Police identified the victim only as Lowela, a resident of Barangay 2 in Manapla, Negros Occidental.

According to investigators, the victim had just left the jail facility with two companions and boarded a rented tricycle driven by a resident of Manapla when an unidentified gunman opened fire at 4.08pm.

She sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of her face and died as a result of her injuries.

The suspects were reportedly riding a black motorcycle.

Witnesses described them as two men wearing black bonnets and no helmets.

One was wearing a yellow-gold sweatshirt, while the other was dressed in a black T-shirt.

After the shooting, the assailants immediately fled in an undetermined direction.

Police are conducting a follow-up investigation to identify the suspects and determine the motive behind the attack. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
