SINGAPORE (Bernama): A Tanzania-registered container vessel, Golden Star 1, sank approximately six kilometres off Batam Island, the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) said.

In a statement on Saturday, MPA said the vessel reportedly took on water and subsequently sank around 10.30 pm on Friday, with nine crew members safely rescued by the Indonesian authorities.

The authority issued navigational broadcasts advising vessels to exercise caution when transiting the area, and to report any sighting of containers adrift.

"Vessel traffic in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore remains unaffected. There are currently no reports of oil pollution in Singapore waters.

MPA has informed the Indonesian authorities and is monitoring the situation," it said.
