Father, son among latest fatalities in Philippine building collapse

ANGELES CITY: Authorities on Friday (May 29) identified the latest fatalities recovered from the collapsed nine-storey building in Barangay Balibago here as a father and son who were among the construction workers trapped beneath the rubble.

The fifth fatality was identified as 26-year-old Christian Sabile, whose body was retrieved from the hot zone at around 7:57am on Thursday, following overnight extrication operations after he was discovered beneath the rubble on Wednesday evening.

The sixth fatality was later identified as his father, Roberto Sabile, 51, whose body was recovered at 12:40am on Friday, as retrieval operations continued overnight at the unstable collapse site.

Fire Supt. Maria Leah Sajili, regional public information officer of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Central Luzon, confirmed that the two victims were among the workers inside the under-construction structure when it collapsed before dawn on May 24, triggering days of continuous search, rescue, and retrieval operations.

The collapse has so far claimed the lives of four construction workers — Roberto and Christian Sabile, Mark Laurence Capungay, 21, and Porperio Alikaway, 66.

Also among the fatalities was Malaysian national Mohd Reza Abdullah, 65, who had been staying at a nearby hotel affected by the incident. Another male victim has yet to be identified. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
