Senior citizen fined BND21,100 for possessing smuggled cigarettes in Brunei

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A 63-year-old local woman has been fined BND21,100 after pleading guilty to possessing undeclared cigarettes, following enforcement action by the Royal Customs and Excise Department (JKED).

Fatimah Mohammad was charged under Section 146(1)(d) of the Excise Order 2006 for having various types of cigarettes without lawful authority.

The offence took place on Nov 23, 2023, at around 7.36pm at a residence in the STKRJ Tanah Jambu area, where enforcement officers from the JKED’s Bandar Seri Begawan branch carried out the arrest.

A total of 21 cartons and five packets of assorted cigarettes, along with BND10 in cash, were seized during the operation.

The case was heard before Magistrate Syaffina Shahif at the Magistrate’s Court in Bandar Seri Begawan on April 30, 2026.

The defendant was ordered to pay a fine of BND21,100 or face 13 months’ imprisonment in default.

All seized items, including the cigarettes and cash, were ordered to be forfeited to the government for disposal. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
