The Philippines encourages consumers to join a weekly power-saving activity

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The Philippines is launching a weekly energy-saving initiative, Oras Natin sa Efficiency (ONE), to encourage consumers to reduce electricity use amid concerns over oil supply issues linked to the conflict in West Asia.

The programme will run every Saturday from 8 pm to 9 pm and is part of efforts by the Department of Energy (DOE) to promote energy conservation, Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported.

DOE Director Patrick Aquino said the initiative follows positive results from this year’s Earth Hour.

He said about 145 megawatts were saved during the annual event last March 28, enough to power approximately one million households.

"In the current state of national emergency, ONE is aimed to encourage our citizens to be part of the solution,” Aquino said in an interview on Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon.

He said turning off and unplugging appliances not being used is a big help to address unnecessary usage.

Aquino expressed hope that more consumers would join the weekly activity to help reduce consumption.

"It is not only the government that will implement this. We hope to bring participants from the private sector and cause-oriented groups in the coming days,” he added.
