Gayong 2, the sequel to the hit movie Gayong, makes a splashing start in the Malaysian box-office scene

The highly anticipated Malaysian epic action sequel, Gayong 2, officially premiered in cinemas nationwide on April 9, 2026.

Following the massive success of the first film, which grossed over RM4 million, this installment is reported to be larger in scale, featuring deeper storytelling and more intense action sequences.

According to a report from Bernama, the film continues the legacy of Datuk Meor Abdul Rahman, the founder of Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia.

From its initial screening to its official opening day, Gayong 2 has been well-received by audiences, with increasing social media buzz and cinema attendance, signaling a positive reception. Unlike the first film, Gayong 2 is darker and more realistic, tackling issues of corruption, abuse of power, and betrayal, making it more relatable to reality and more serious in its storytelling.

Set in 1950s Singapore following the Japanese Occupation, the story follows Meor as a CID officer with the British Police Force.

Meor discovers deep-seated corruption within the police ranks, specifically involving high-ranking officer SP Malcolm (played by Bobby Tonelli), who is linked to the feared "Tiger Group" Chinese secret society.

The narrative explores the struggle between duty and family when Meor's principles put his wife, Chom, and their children at risk from criminal syndicates.

According to Executive Publisher, Khairul Anuar Latip, he expressed his gratitude for the audience's reception of this film, “Praise be to God, Soul Pictures is very touched and grateful for the support of local film fans for the film Gayong 2.

"Looking at the early screenings and the first day of official release across Malaysia, the response and support have been very encouraging. Therefore, we hope this support continues and can give us the spirit to continue creating works that are more about heritage, culture, and struggle in the future. Thank you, Malaysia.”

This film is supported by Primeworks Studios as a marketing partner and is directed by Faisal Ishak.

The film features a star-studded lineup of local and regional talent:

Beto Kusyairy: Reprises his role as Meor Abdul Rahman. Despite suffering from slipped discs during filming, he performed his own stunts and silat sequences.

Nabila Huda: Returns as Meor’s supportive wife, Chom.

Syafie Naswip: Joins the core cast.

Sandra Lim: Miss Universe Malaysia 2024 makes her debut as Jade Li, undergoing intense combat training for her role.

Yayan Ruhian: The renowned Indonesian actor served as the action choreographer and makes a special appearance in the film.

The production was noted for its tight schedule, with actor Beto Kusyairy sharing that the cast and crew pushed through significant exhaustion to deliver the "best possible" sequel. Would you like to find cinema showtimes or watch the official trailer for Gayong 2?

Beto Kusyairy has made a name for himself as the go-to actor for Malaysian period films.

After his star turn as Sarawak nationalist Rosli Dhoby in the 2009 drama series 'Warkah Terakhir', many moviegoers felt that Beto was the right man to bring to life Malaysia's unsung heroes in biopics.

"I take it as a compliment, because non-fiction heroes are challenging and somewhat intimidating, lest you don't do justice to them and disappoint their loved ones," said Beto at the recent screening of 'Gayong 2' in TGV One Utama, Petaling Jaya, on Thursday, April 9.

While action heroes greatly interest Beto, he admits that he is more of a character actor, and if he were to take on more historical roles, he would rather play "white collar" people such as academicians, doctors, and public servants.

Beto credits Rusdi Ramli, Zizan Nin, Che Kem and Remy Ishak as his favourite "non-fiction character" actors.

"I love Rusdi and Zizan in 'Tanda Putera', likewise Che Kem in '1957: Hati Malaya' and Remy in 'Pulang'.

"I hope more non-fiction heroes get their own biopics, especially those who did not appear in history books."
