New beginnings for 618 Brunei citizens

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has consented to the awarding of Citizenship Certificates to 618 recipients during the 44th Citizenship Certificate Presentation ceremony at BRIDEX Conference Hall, Kampong Jerudong Tuesday (April 7).

Recipient Nasrudin Abd Rahman in an interview shared, “I have been waiting for this moment for around 30 years. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to His Majesty for granting me citizenship.”

The 71-year-old added, “I have been in residing in Brunei for 60 years and I have been working in a company that prepares food in aviation, contributing to the country for over 25 years. Currently, I am retired and enjoying my retirement.”

Meanwhile, Yong Siau Ling said, “I took the citizenship test and passed two years ago. Today, I am really excited and happy to be able to finally become a Bruneian. I hope that I can contribute back to the country as much as possible after becoming a citizen.”

She also extended her appreciation to His Majesty for granting her Brunei Citizenship.

Recipient Nurul Safoora Shaperi said, “I have been waiting for this day for nearly nine years since 2016. I am very excited and Alhamdulillah today I can finally become a Brunei Citizen.”

She added, “Currently I am working under IBTE and I hope to contribute to the country by being more committed and dedicated in carrying out my responsibility as a government officer.”

Acting Director of Immigration and National Registration Azmi Abdul Rahim said, “It is my hope that the granting of citizenship will strengthen your resolve and commitment to fulfil your responsibilities as citizens, and to contribute your service and dedication to the nation that we deeply cherish.”

The recipients of citizenship comprised those who applied for citizenship under Chapter 15 of the Brunei Nationality Act namely under Section 5(1) and 8(1) and who have passed the Malay language proficiency test both written and oral, Section 6(1) – children of mothers who are Brunei citizens, children to fathers who are Brunei citizens and adopted children to parents holding Brunei citizenship and Section 5(6) – wives to husbands who are Brunei citizens.
