VIENTIANE: Addressing the inaugural meeting of the government’s 10th-term cabinet on Monday, the Prime Minister urged members to deliver tangible results as the new government faces mounting economic and fuel pressures.
The inaugural meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office, was chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, with Deputy Prime Ministers and cabinet members in attendance.
It followed the first sitting of the 10th National Assembly last week, which endorsed the reappointment of Dr Sonexay, approved the government structure, and appointed other government leaders.
According to the Lao News Agency, the cabinet was urged to focus on practical outcomes that directly benefit the multi-ethnic Lao people. Members were instructed to move from “words to real action” and take clear, concrete steps to implement projects, policies, and reforms.
Cabinet members reviewed a draft work plan for 2026-2030 and discussed new regulations and working mechanisms to strengthen government operations. They also considered a draft Decision outlining the division of responsibilities among the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Ministers.
Another Decision under review sets out how ministries and equivalent agencies will provide oversight and support to Vientiane and the provinces, aiming to improve coordination and strengthen governance nationwide.
The cabinet also examined a list of national projects proposed for the next five years, which are designed to attract private investment alongside state-funded initiatives.
Members reviewed plans to encourage greater use of electric vehicles and alternative energy sources, reflecting the government’s growing focus on energy security and sustainable development.
The government begins its term amid global challenges, including conflicts involving major powers and Middle Eastern countries, which have affected fuel supply and driven up prices.
Domestic challenges such as digitalisation, human resource development, and administrative bottlenecks were also highlighted as issues that require immediate attention.
Prime Minister Sonexay urged officials to work in harmony and with a high degree of responsibility and focus, to ensure that decisions and policies deliver tangible benefits for the Lao people.
President Thongloun Sisoulith also spoke at the meeting, encouraging the new government to act decisively and remain committed to the country’s development priorities amid complex domestic and international circumstances. - Vientiane TImes/ANN
