Increase in public bus passengers

The Yangon Bus Service, the main public bus network in Yangon, has seen passenger numbers rise following the introduction of the odd-even licence plate system to reduce fuel consumption, the state-owned daily Global New Light of Myanmar reported.

At present, about 3,500 buses are serving around 1.7 million passengers per day, the report said, citing the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC).

According to the YRTC, there are over 5,400 buses, including 5,013 Compressed Natural Gas-powered buses and 423 diesel buses, the report said.

Previously, diesel buses had a fuel quota of 20 litres per day. This has now been increased to 40 litres to help them operate according to their assigned routes, it said. — Xinhua
