VIENTIANE: The Vientiane Traffic Police Department is deploying 145 personnel across the city centre to help drivers adjust to changes in traffic flow, which have been introduced to accommodate the planned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
Head of the Department, Lieutenant Colonel Sangkhom Phommalat, said police were out in force to help and advise motorists, not to penalise them.
The department has stationed officers at 63 locations throughout central Vientiane, including at junctions where changes to the normal direction of flow have been made.
The aim of the exercise is to familiarise motorists with the changes, which involve changing one-way streets to two-way and vice versa, in a bid to ease traffic congestion. Police are strategically stationed to instruct drivers and pedestrians, helping them navigate the revised routes safely and efficiently.
City authorities said the initial phase of the new system involves informing the motoring public of the changes and encouraging them to comply.
For the time being, motorists who unintentionally violate the new traffic rules will receive warnings and guidance rather than fines.
Lt CoL Sangkhom said the awareness-raising campaign will continue until drivers fully understand and comply with the changes.
Enforcement measures are expected to come into effect within the next two to three months, when drivers who fail to comply with the new rules may face fines and other penalties.
Traffic police officials urge all motorists and pedestrians to remain attentive during the transition period. Specifically, road users are advised to be alert for newly installed traffic signs and to follow directional arrows and road markings.
Local authorities stressed that public cooperation is essential to ensure a smooth transition to the new system and to minimise accidents.
