HONG KONG: A man who claims to have AIDS has been arrested after hijacking a bus in Hong Kong and causing it to crash, the South China Morning Post has learned.

A source said the 28-year-old mainland Chinese man, surnamed Miao, had blood stains on his hands when he was apprehended.

The man also incoherently spoke in Chinese and appeared dazed, according to the insider.

The 54-year-old Citybus driver, surnamed Choi, made a report to police at 6.45pm on Friday (Feb 27) after upper-deck passengers told him that Miao had struck the rear-right windows with an emergency escape hammer, shattering them.

As Choi pulled over near 255 King’s Road in North Point to check the windows, Miao rushed down, jumped into the driver’s seat and released the handbrake, causing the bus to roll backwards and collide with a KMB bus behind it.

Choi tried but failed to restrain Miao, who was later arrested by police outside an HSBC branch on King’s Road.

Following further investigation, police arrested him on four charges: criminal damage, taking a vehicle without permission, driving without a licence and driving without third-party insurance.

Since Miao claimed to have AIDS and had been in physical contact and a struggle with the driver, both were taken to Eastern District Hospital for treatment. - South China Morning Post
