VIENTIANE: Laos' Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme in Laos, is taking steps to promote disability rights in line with international standards.
According to the ministry's report on Wednesday (Feb 25), a conference on the National Action Plan to Implement the Recommendations of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held on Monday (Feb 23) in the Lao capital Vientiane.
Speaking at the meeting, Lao Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Keo Chanthavixay highlighted that the plan is a practical action framework reflecting the government's commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities.
The plan, covering 2026-2027, focuses on six key areas, including improving legislation to eliminate discrimination and strengthen monitoring mechanisms, providing support for poor and vulnerable persons under the law on persons with disabilities, and enhancing access to infrastructure, transportation, and information to make services more accessible.
The plan also promotes inclusive education and public health services, including rehabilitation in remote areas, supports career development through job creation and access to capital, and develops a modern disability statistics system to guide planning and policymaking. - Xinhua
