Thanlwin Bridge in Myanmar bombed a second time by KNPP, KNDF and PDF alliance

YANGON: Thanlwin Bridge (Hpasaung) in Kayah State was destroyed for a second time on the morning of February 25 after being blown up by a joint force of the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF), and the People’s Defence Force (PDF), according to reports.

The bridge spans the Thanlwin River near Hpasaung and connects Hpasaung Township with Mese Township.

Military columns had reportedly regained full control of Hpasaung on February 15 after it had been temporarily held by KNPP, KNDF and PDF forces. Security operations have continued in the surrounding areas.

The bridge was previously bombed on February 17, and the Ponn Creek Bridge was also destroyed on February 20. The latest explosion marks the second attack on theThanlwin Bridge.

As a result of the blast, a section approximately 300 feet long and 24 feet wide between piers P-5 and P-7 on the western waterway side of the bridge collapsed. No casualties were reported.

The Salween Bridge is a reinforced concrete structure measuring 1,260 feet in length and 24 feet in width, with three-foot pedestrian walkways on both sides. It was completed and opened for public use in 2015.

Due to the damage, vehicles and travelers are currently unable to cross the bridge, and the flow of goods has been disrupted.

Officials from the relevant Road and Bridge Department have stated that repair work will be carried out as quickly as possible, while security forces are increasing measures to ensure stability and security in the area. - Eleven Media/ANN
