Indian university apologises after backlash over Chinese robot fiasco

NEW DELHI: (Bernama) A private Indian university has apologised after facing backlash over one of its representatives at a high-profile artificial intelligence (AI) summit presenting a Chinese-made robot as locally-created.

Galgotias University was asked to leave its stall at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi after the misrepresentation became public, drawing criticism on social media.

The university, located in Uttar Pradesh near Delhi, showcased student-led startups at the event.

Its stall had "Orion", a Chinese-made robotic dog, which was presented by Neha Singh, a professor of communications, as a product of the university's Centre of Excellence.

"We at Galgotias University, wish to apologise profusely for the confusion created at the recent Al Summit. One of our representatives, manning the pavilion, was ill-informed.

"She was not aware of the technical origins of the product and in her enthusiasm of being on camera, gave factually incorrect information even though she was not authorised to speak to the press," the university said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 18).

"We request your kind understanding as there was no institutional intent to misrepresent this innovation," it said.

The robot was identified as the Unitree Go2 priced about US$2,800 and commercially available. - Bernama
