VIENTIANE: The Lao government reaffirmed its commitment to advancing digital transformation as a key driver of national development, continuing efforts to enhance e-government services, develop a digitally skilled workforce, and promote overall digital growth.
In his speech marking Lao National Digital Day on Jan 10, Lao Minister of Technology and Communications Santisouk Simmalavong emphasized that digital transformation is a strategic, long-term priority essential for strengthening national competitiveness and promoting sustainable development.
Santisouk highlighted key achievements in Laos' digital transformation, including the expansion of the national fiber-optic network to over 36,000 kilometers, 4G coverage reaching 76 per cent of villages, the launch of 5G services in 59 districts, and a nationwide internet usage rate of 63 per cent.
Significant progress has also been made in digital government, with the government intranet network now connecting all ministries and provinces, complemented by widespread implementation of the e-office system. To support business and innovation, the ministry has strengthened legislation and strategic plans covering e-government services, cybersecurity, and startup promotion.
Laos has also established the Lao Digital Park as a central hub for incubating startups, attracting investment, and developing a highly skilled workforce focused on environmentally friendly innovation.
In 2026, the ministry will focus on implementing the resolutions of the 12th National Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan. Priority will be given to building an independent and self-reliant economy by applying modern technologies and innovation, particularly artificial intelligence, across all sectors.
Santisouk called on all sectors and citizens to actively adopt digital technology, strengthen digital literacy, and stay vigilant against cybercrime to support sustainable digital development.
According to a report from the Lao Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday, the ministry has urged agencies at all levels to accelerate the issuance of digital ID cards and the digitisation of census records by mid-2026.
Laos is also collaborating with international partners to enhance digital education and foster innovation among youth, ensuring long-term, sustainable progress in the country's digital transformation. - Xinhua
