NEW DELHI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi on Monday (Jan 19) for the second round of questioning in connection with the Karur stampede probe. The agency earlier questioned Vijay for several hours on Jan 12.

With Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu approaching, the CBI has intensified its investigation into the Karur stampede.

At least 41 people were crushed to death and several others were wounded after the stampede broke out during Vijay’s rally in Karur on Sept 27, 2025.

Following the stampede, the Tamil Nadu police alleged that TVK leadership ignored their advice and failed to take necessary precautions. The state government had formed a one-member Commission to investigate the incident.

However, Vijay alleged that there was a conspiracy against him and demanded an independent probe. His party also moved the Supreme Court seeking a CBI inquiry.

The top court in October last year handed over the probe to the CBI. The court also formed an oversight committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi to monitor the CBI probe for a fair and impartial investigation into the tragedy.

What was Vijay asked during the first round of questioning?

According to reports, the CBI officials grilled Vijay for several hours and asked some key questions, including whether he had prior knowledge of the arrangements, and whether the organisers made any efforts to control the crowd.

The CBI officials also asked Vijay if the local administration had alerted him in advance and when he first came to know about the severity of the crowd.

Vijay reportedly answered all the questions but the investigators were not satisfied and summoned him again. - The Statesman/ANN
