SYDNEY: (Bernama-Xinhua) -- A man armed with a bow and arrow has died after being shot by police northwest of Sydney on Friday (Jan 16) afternoon, reported Xinhua.

The police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said in a statement that officers were called around 1.40 pm local time on Friday to conduct a welfare check in the small town of Gunnedah, over 300 kilometres northwest of Sydney.

Officers arrived and spoke to a man outside a home before he went inside and returned armed with a bow and arrow.

The man aimed at officers after they had returned to their vehicle for cover, and he was subsequently shot.

He was treated by ambulance paramedics, but died at the scene.

The NSW Police Force said the state crime command's homicide squad would lead the investigation into the incident and that the investigation would be reviewed by police integrity bodies. - Bernama-Xinhua
