Australia beats China to win FIBA U18 Asia Cup title


NEW DELHI, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Australia beat China 89-79 in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday to claim the FIBA U18 Asia Cup title.

Jai Fa'ale had 19 points and Bailey Hanson added 17 points to lead Australia to the victory.

Zhang Yizhaojie led China with a game-high 20 points and Li Junxian and Zhang Yuchen contributed 15 and 13 respectively as the Chinese recorded its best finish since winning the tournament in 2014.

Australia raced to a 26-18 lead in the first quarter and improved to 38-27 with four minutes and 40 seconds left in the second. Then Zhang Yuchen had 10 points to boost a 15-2 burst and help China overtake the lead at 42-40 with one minute and a half remaining in the first half.

The second half was also hotly contested as the two sides fought to a 62-all tie late in the third quarter, but Australia staged a 14-5 run from then on for a 78-67 cushion with six minutes and 20 seconds left in the game and never looked back.

The Australians outrebounded China 57-35 to reap 36 second chance points, compared to 11 for China.
